About Slivka
Slivka Residential College is Northwestern's Science and Engineering Residential College. It was made possible via a gift from the Wissner-Slivka Foundation in 2000.
The members of Slivka, known as Slivkans, enjoy the use of a Discovery Room with computers and printers, a music room with a piano and recording equipment, as well as a Recreation Lounge with Foosball, Ping-Pong, and Pool tables. Additionally, each floor has fully-equipped kitchens with a refrigerator, stove, oven, and microwave. For added convenience, Lisa's Cafe, a coffee shop and convenience store named in honor of Ben Slivka's wife Lisa, is integrated with the first floor of Slivka.
As a Residential College, Slivka is much more than just a dorm for 140 residents: it is a Living and Learning Community comprised of both Students and Fellows (NU faculty, grad students, etc.). Our Fellows, who are faculty and staff members at Northwestern, interact with Slivkans on a regular basis, from chatting during lunch to going on canoeing trips and rooting for the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Highlights from the past include an Apple/Pumpkin-picking trip in Wisconsin, an elaborate Thanksgiving dinner, going to see Jimmy Eat World and Gratitude at the Riviera, barbecues out on the lake fill, subsidized trips to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Second City, and Wicked, and a trip to Six-Flags. Even better, anyone may suggest or plan an activity - the more original, the better!
Visitors to Slivka are always welcome. Several times a year Slivka hosts prospective students who stay the night and get to experience a taste of Northwestern.
